When you think of the color terracotta in roofscapes, most people think of round, red roof tiles that have been a design staple of traditional Spanish-style homes for centuries. What if we told you that red or terracotta based concrete roof tiles can actually be quite modern and versatile? Let’s see how you can give terracotta roof tiles a more updated look.

Consider selecting a terracotta colored concrete roof tile in a more contemporary profile. Eagle Roofing Products’ Bel Air concrete roof tile profile would be a great option with it’s simple design and flat, smooth surface that provide clean lines. Try a concrete roof tile color like Eagle’s Caliente or Kona Red Range to complement the arches, stonework and stucco of your home’s Spanish influenced exterior, similar to the home pictured.

Another way to add a modern twist to red tile is with your home’s architectural style. Just because design trends are shifting to a more contemporary look does not mean you can’t include classic Spanish elements in your home’s exterior elevation. Have the best of both worlds and select a high S-barrel profile, which is most similar to Eagle Roofing Products’ Capistrano profile, while adding those subtle elements into the design of your home. The home to the left executes this look beautifully. The modern feel of the hard, clean lines within the house shape and windows are softened with the barrel shaped tile roof, cream paint color and stone work.

If you currently have a red colored roof installed and aren’t ready to reroof just yet or make any major architectural renovations, changing your exterior paint color could be an ideal alternative. Choose something that isn’t the “typical white” and go with a modern hue. A warm beige, subtle yellow, dull blue or neutral gray are just a few paint options for you to choose from that will revamp your home.

So, if you’re considering a more modern look for your home, don’t rule out a terracotta colored tile. Whether it’s changing up the profile, pairing it with a different style of architecture, or paint color, terracotta concrete roof tiles can certainly be an option for you.
