The official hurricane season is almost here. Beginning June 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting “near- or above-normal” activity with the possibility of ten to 16 named storms in the Atlantic Ocean throughout the 2018 season. Now is the perfect time to ensure your home or commercial property is ready; most importantly, your tile roof. Here are a couple tips to help you prepare.

The first step in ensuring your home is prepared for severe weather is conducting a roof inspection. While it can be easy to spot broken or cracked tiles yourself from the ground, it is advised that you hire a licensed and certified roofing contractor to perform a more thorough roof inspection of both the outside and inside, such as the attic. This will allow them to check for underlying issues with the underlayment and possible leaks. The contractor can then provide a detailed report on the status of your tile roof, including life expectancy, estimates for necessary repairs and ways to secure your roof in the event of a hurricane.

An additional step to take when preparing for hurricane season is to trim overhanging trees and bushes. Hurricane wind speeds can exceed 156mph and can easily thrash around the heaviest of tree branches, causing them to fall on your tile roof. By trimming them beforehand, you reduce the risk of damage. This will also lessen debris buildup in gutters and allow for proper drainage of rainwater.

Remember, a properly installed roof with concrete roof tile, such as those manufactured by Eagle Roofing Products, can withstand sustained wind speeds of up to 180mph as they are tested and approved for use in the Miami-Dade high-velocity hurricane zone. In addition, concrete roof tile is proven to be much stronger than most other roofing materials, resisting damage from hailstones up to 2” in diameter. So, once your properly installed tile roof has been inspected, problem areas are repaired and your roof is clear of overhanging limbs, you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your home is protected.
