For centuries, concrete roof tiles have been one of the most popular sloped roofing products due to their unsurpassed beauty and durability. Before modern technology, these tiles were made primarily by hand, or by semi-hand operated machines. Now, the process has transformed into a strategic, mechanical method that has enabled concrete roof tile manufacturing plants to meet the growing needs of building industry.

The production process of concrete roof tiles begins with combining four natural products: sand, cement, water and iron oxide. These natural ingredients will go through a series of tests to ensure they meet the standards for proper production. Coloring agents are added to the mixture, along with various additives, when necessary. The mixture is then pressed onto steel molds that create the desired shape of the concrete tile. These molds undergo routine checks and cleanings by a quality control team to prevent sand, cement and sealer from accumulating in the crevasses, as this can lead to tile deformities.

Tiles are then placed into racks and taken to a drying kiln where they will remain for approximately four hours. Once the tiles have hardened, they are removed from the racks and receive a coating of a water-based masonry sealer. This sealer is applied to the surface of the tiles to protect against the natural occurrence of efflorescence. Select tiles will be pulled from the production line every hour to perform break strength tests to ensure the tiles either meet or exceed the code mandated minimum standard for break strength of 300 PSI, or pounds per square inch.

Finally, the tiles are stacked and banded into pallets. Each pallet comprises of approximately 300 square feet of roof coverage. Now the pallets are ready to be placed into stock inventory for future orders, or are shipped to their job site location where they will be installed and remain for years to come.

Although the manufacturing process of concrete roof tiles has changed over time and are now produced in dozens of shape and color variations, the timeless beauty and sustainability remains.
